The George at Alstonefield

The George is an unspoilt, historic, family run pub in the Peak District village of Alstonefield, above Dovedale.

The pub is small, with a bar, snug to the side of the bar and dining room.  The bar is and always will be the same with portraits of locals, historic artefacts and a homely fire.  The dining room and snug have been restored to their original simplicity with lime plastered walls and farmhouse furniture.  Candlelight and fresh flowers add a touch of elegance.

The pub is the perfect base to explore some of Staffordshire's and Derbyshire's breathtaking countryside, with a selection of walks from a gentle evening stroll to a marathon challenge.  We also host fly fishermen fishing on the Rivers Dove and Manifold in the footsteps of Isaak Walton and Charles Cotton.

We do not have any accommodation but you can follow this link to recommended local accommodation.

We are close to local towns and historic houses.  Ashbourne is seven miles to the South and the historic spa town of Buxton is ten miles to the North. Tissington Hall, as well as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall are a short distance away.

We hope that you can join us soon to enjoy our well kept real ales, carefully selected wine list and real pub food.

Flagg Races brunch

Each year on Easter Tuesday, thousands of enthusiastic spectators enjoy Flagg Races, the thrilling spectacle of thoroughbreds racing across spectacular open countryside in the glorious Peak District.

Flagg Races is unique as a point-to-point course in that it is the only remaining point-to-point meeting to run the hunt members' race over natural hunting country.

The races start at 1.00 p.m. with pony racing beforehand.  We will be serving brunch from 11.00 a.m. if you are on your way to the races.  Booking is essential. Please telephone Emily on 01335 310205.

Yoga with Candida Elton at Lode Barn

Candida will be running yoga sessions in Lode Barn, to the rear of the pub at 4.00 p.m. for approximately an hour and a half on the following Saturdays - 27 February, 6 March, 13 March and 20 March.  Each session costs £6 per person.  You can pay on the day or book in advance with Candida directly on 07941 243211 or by e-mailing her at yoga@candidaelton.co.uk.

The classes encourage ease and efficiency in movement.  You will learn how to apply methods of breath awareness and anatomic visualisation to transitions into and out of key yoga postures, gradually building up to extended fluid sequences.

If you have previously experienced any form of hatha yoga this class will offer new ways of working, complementing your existing practice. If you are completely new to yoga this class will teach you a general and safe method for approaching key yoga postures, helping to improve your posture, alignment and freedom of movement in yoga and in everyday life.

Candida has over fifteen years of yoga experience, predominantly in Ashtanga and Scaravelli based methods. She has previously trained with many highly regarded teachers in New York and London (among them John Scott, Lino Miele, Sara Baird, Jean Hall and Giovanni Felicioni). Candida is also a contemporary dancer with experience in Body Mind Centring and Skinner Releasing – movement systems which inform her yoga teaching.
